NERIA:.... THE FILM THAT MAKES ME ALWAYS SOUND LIKE A FEMINIST!...BUT I'M NOT ONE

NERIA is one among few African films I have been watching over and over again and still tears couldn’t stop rolling down my cheeks........ Daaayumn! I ‘m not even getting used to it…. it is sooooo touching…

The Mtukudzi’s song….the lyrics that I once didn’t understand them till I got translation heheheee and that is when i got all emotional…the rhythm of the Song and the genuine voice of Tukudzi…. God knows how I wiped tears till I finished my tissues in the box….. used my khanga, hands and then got up to wash my face…. I cried an ocean my dear!

THE TRAILER.... i'm sure i remind you somewhere...

Neria is a Zimbabwean film made in 1993, written by the novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga. It is directed by Goodwin Mawuru and the screenplay was written by Louise Riber.... May be some day i will be all over wikipedia  named as novelist Laura who wrote blah blah novel which turned out to be a movie....God listen my dream!!

Neria, a 35 year old woman living in the Harare suburb of Warren Park. When the movie begins, she is happily married to Patrick and has two children, Mavis, aged 13 and Shingirayi aged 7. Both children are in school and seem to be happily provided for by their parents. The family has just bought (or finished building a new home) and owns a modest car. Yaani maisha ndio yamekubaliiii.....ndoa inaonekana kukolea viungo!

Neria works at a women’s crocheting co-operative where, in a good month, she earns as much as her husband. Neria and Patrick are painting their new home, a project which Neria contributes to both financially and physically. Patrick and Neria have been living in the city since their marriage, though they go to the village to visit their relatives on occasion. The bottom-line is that Neria’s family is modern, happy and secure. Much of the happiness seems to come from the fact that Neria and her husband understand each other so well.....unaona bwana!

Kasha la movie yenyewe.... kipindi hicho hakuna CD.... kitu video cassette

The happiness and security in Neria’s life is however painfully destroyed by fate. As Patrick is returning home one evening he is hit by a car and killed. Neria is devastated. Her brother-in-law, Phineas, steps in to help. Neria and her children go to her husband’s rural home for the funeral.....mtiti unaanzia hapa sasa....
Neria akiomboleza... i always skip this scene....
it reminds me someone... somewhere

Msala mtupu!

waliporudi mjini, siku moja Phineas akaenda mjini kule, akazoa kila kitu ndani ya nyumba na lock akabadilisha...unaambiwa alizoa mpaka watoto....sasa ikawa inabidi hela ya matumizi huyu dada aombe kwa shemeji....sikilizia manyanyaso sasa.... uwiiiii i nearly punch my tv screen....the mna is damn crueeeeeel!!!

Phineas ... Shemeji huyo.... Salute to him
i did well, drove us crazy enough to hate him

ananyanyasika wakati haki zake zipo wazi....

Neria goes through the necessary legal channels at the community court level and her eldest child is appointed their heir. Phineas is ordered to return the property. Phineas is outraged by the turn of events as he feels he is naturally entitled to his brothers’ property. He takes the matter to the High Court, claiming that Neria is not fit to maintain the children and that in such circumstances it is best to follow customary law.

After an involved court hearing which brings to light Phineas’ exploitative, greedy and insensitive nature, the judgement is that Neria will remain the guardian of the heir. Through this process Ambuya (Mother in law) realises that Phineas has all along been twisting tradition to suit himself. Ambuya comes to understand, through witnessing Neria’s victory over patriarchal exploitation, that at times tradition must give way to changing times.

Yule mwanamuziki Mtukudzi humu ameigiza kama kaka wa Neria..... na kile kibao maarufu cha Neria..... hebu nikusikilizishe kidogo
